What Is VIVOTIF1?

VIVOTIF is indicated for immunization of adults and children aged five years and older against disease caused by Salmonella Typhi (new nomenclature: Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhi).

Results from clinical studies indicate that adults and children 5 years and older may be protected against typhoid fever following the oral ingestion of 4 doses of VIVOTIF (enteric-coated capsules). Immunization (ingestion of all 4 capsules) should be completed at least 1 week prior to exposure to S. Typhi.

This vaccine should be used in accordance with official recommendations.

VIVOTIF works in three ways

VIVOTIF protects against Salmonella Typhi by mimicking the response to natural infection and stimulating local, cellular and systemic/hymoral immunity 2-5

  1. Local immune response: IgA
  2. Cellular mediated immunity:
    macrophages/cytotoxic T lymphocytes
  3. Systemic/humoral immune responses: IgG

Seven Year Protective Efficacy Demonstrated in Clinical Trials

The protective efficacy of VIVOTIF was demonstrated in several large-scale field trials involving more than 500,000 subjects2

Established Safety Profile1

VIVOTIF is generally well tolerated with a low incidence of adverse events.

Reporting Adverse Events

Adverse events should be reported.

Dosage and Administration1

1 capsule taken on Days 1, 3, 5 and 7 may provide up to 7 years of protection against typhoid fever. Complete vaccination is comprised of the ingestion of four capsules. Optimal immune response may not be achieved unless the entire vaccination schedule is completed.

A booster dose consisting of 4 doses, taken as one capsule on alternate days, should be given every 7 years under conditions of repeated or continued exposure to typhoid fever.

  • Immunization (ingestion of all 4 capsules) should be completed at least 1 week prior to exposure to S. Typhi.
  • Oral administration with 4 capsules over 7 days, each to be taken approximately 1 hour before a meal with cold or lukewarm water
  • Refrigerate at 2°C – 8°C

In the case of travel from a non-endemic area to an area where typhoid is endemic, a booster consisting of the 4 doses of VIVOTIF should be administered every 7 years.1

VIVOTIF is supplied in a single foil blister containing 4 doses of vaccine in a single package.

Storage and Handling

  • VIVOTIF should be stored between 2°C and 8°C.
